While dermal fillers are one of the most common and safest cosmetic procedures, injecting dermal fillers into the skin is likely to cause swelling—especially in an area as delicate as the lips. At Zochowski Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, we offer non-invasive dermal fillers as cosmetic treatments for anti-wrinkles, anti-aging, collagen stimulation, and adding volume to specific areas of the face.
If you receive fillers and notice swelling afterward, don’t be alarmed—it’s completely normal and nothing more than a typical side effect of lip fillers. That being said, it’s important to follow the best lip filler aftercare practices to minimize swelling and receive the best lip filler results.
How Long Does Swelling Last After Lip Fillers?
There are very few common side effects associated with lip injections and recovery is generally very quick and easy; however, you may notice some temporary soreness, redness, bruising, and swelling in the area immediately after your injections.
If you experience swelling in the treated area, this shouldn’t be an immediate cause for concern. It’s perfectly normal and temporary. Once the swelling goes down, your lip augmentation will look and feel beautiful. Patients tend to report that lip swelling is the worst on the first day, particularly in the morning. Swelling should go down within two to three days after your lip filler treatment and should completely resolve within two weeks post-treatment.
If swelling lasts longer than two weeks and is accompanied by pain or redness, contact your doctor to make sure everything is healing as it should. In the meantime, here are a few things you can do to help manage swelling and discomfort.
What Helps to Reduce Swelling After Lip Fillers?
After receiving lip filler injections, swelling can be easily managed by applying ice to the lip area. Gently apply an ice pack wrapped in a cloth to the lips. Be sure to use a soft cloth and do not use anything that could stick to the lips as this can worsen the discomfort. Keep the ice pack on your lips for short periods of time and swap it out with a hot pad. Do this several times a day.
Talk to your doctor before taking medication for the swelling, but generally Tylenol is approved and great for reducing inflammation. Other common pain medications like ibuprofen, Advil, or Motrin aren’t recommended as they have blood thinning qualities and can impact the healing process. Over the counter antihistamines may also work to reduce swelling, and arnica cream can also help with the appearance of bruising.
Drink plenty of water and eat lots of healthy fruits and vegetables after your procedure. Avoid salty or spicy foods, as these can dehydrate your skin and irritate your lips.
Sleep with your head slightly elevated to reduce blood flow and fluid retention in the area overnight. Especially try to avoid sleeping on your face.
