Kybella® in Columbus, OH
Submental fullness, more commonly known as a “double chin,” affects people of all ages and sizes. In fact, many people who have never been overweight experience unwanted submental fullness, particularly as they get older. This condition can be caused by any of the following factors:
For patients who don’t feel ready for surgery, Kybella® can help get rid of submental fullness. This FDA-approved injectable treatment painlessly melts away fat cells, gradually creating a sleeker jawline and slim neck silhouette.
How Does Kybella® Work?
Kybella® is derived from a natural compound known as deoxycholic acid. Deoxycholic acid is produced by the human body, where it aids in the digestion of fats (it prepares them for absorption by the small intestine). This acid has a long history of medicinal use and, when used correctly, it’s generally well tolerated.
When Kybella® is injected below the skin, it damages fat cells, causing the body to absorb and excrete them. This effectively reduces the size of the patient’s double chin without causing him or her significant discomfort.
What to Expect During Your Kybella® Appointment
Before administering Kybella®, Dr. Zochowski will mark the injection sites. He will then administer a number of injections with a very thin needle just below your chin. Most patients need between 20-30 injections to treat the entire submental region.
For best results, you will need to have more than one treatment. Patients usually need anywhere from two to six treatments, depending on how much submental fat they have.
Recovering from Kybella®
Though Kybella® is a non-invasive procedure, some patients notice slight redness, bruising, and swelling for three to five days after treatment. Mild soreness can also occur, but it’s not usually disruptive. You may wish to take one to three days off of work for cosmetic reasons, but downtime is not strictly necessary after having Kybella®.
After having Kybella®, you should avoid exposing the area to direct sunlight for at least 24 hours. You should also forego any strenuous exercise on the day after your treatment, and you should not drink alcohol.
Most patients don’t experience any serious side effects after having Kybella®. In rare cases, patients report numbness and tingling sensations around the treatment area. In very rare cases, nerve injury has occurred, making it difficult for the patient to swallow or smile.
Most healthy adults can have Kybella® injections. However, if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, you should delay having treatment. Kybella® is also unsuitable for patients with bleeding disorders or compromised immune systems.
Kybella® is highly effective and has a high rate of patient satisfaction. In clinical trials, 79% of patients treated with Kybella® said they were happier with the appearance of their chin and jawline 12 weeks after their final treatment.
